Probate is the court-supervised procedure for transferring assets and paying debts upon a loved one’s death pursuant to their Will, or, if your loved one did not have a Will, than according to intestacy laws.
A probate proceeding includes the following: appointing a personal representative for the decedent’s estate; identifying the decedent’s heirs; collecting the decedent’s assets and selling such assets when appropriate; paying taxes, debts, and claims against the estate; completing the decedent’s final tax returns as well as the estate’s tax returns; and distributing the remaining assets to the decedent’s beneficiaries or heirs.
We can help with every step of this process, from helping you identify whether probate is required for your loved one’s estate, to assisting you with the probate process, to filing even the most complex of tax returns. Nancy L. Winter leads this practice area, bringing her substantial tax and property experience, as well as her background in accounting.
